Research Practice I provides the basic knowledge and skills for writing academic papers, guide students to discover new phenomena or new things in the study, or propose new theories or ideas, and revealing the inherent law. Through introduction and analysis methods, guide students to utilize their wisdom for scientific thinking, know better a variety of research methods, such as literature survey, observation, reasoning, historical research, conceptual analysis, and comparative research method, able to discuss them, design and carry out their own research proposal.

Research Pratice II is the major and comprehensive practice and teaching session for the Diploma graduates before their graduation. It requires students to apply their acquired theories and knowledge to identify problems and solve problems. Through the guidance and supervision of the supervising lecturers, students shall carry out fundamental research to collect and analysis data based on the research proposal presented and submitted in “Research Practice I” course, and complete the first draft of thesis/research paper, work out at least 50% of the first draft of dissertation and reading report.
论文习作(二)是文凭班学生毕业前一个重要的综合性实践学习环节。学生应用所学的专业理论和知识,发现问题,解决问题。以论文习作(一)的学习为基础,在论文习作(二)中通过论文指导老师的指导下,在本学期末完成开题报告及论文初稿至少50%。- Teacher: Yeoh Kim Chuan

This course covers the nature, structure and development of Chinese characters. It is an important part of ancient Chinese and is closely related to Chinese history, phonology, lexicology, exegetics, archaeology and collation of ancient classics. This course discuss the formation, origins, development and evolution of Chinese characters. Thus, through the types of Chinese characters, the division and simplification of character forms, the relationships between the forms and pronunciation, the cultural connotations of Chinese characters are explored. Therefore, by learning the course, will help the students grasp the historical developmental process of Chinese characters.
文字学是研究汉字的性质、结构及形体演变的一门传统学问,是古代汉语的重要组成部分,它与汉语史、音韵学、词汇学、训诂学、考古学以及古籍整理等学科都有密切的联系。本课程是一门选修课。本课程先谈文字形成的过程、汉字的起源与发展、形体的演变等等,进而透过汉字的类型的划分、字形在演变历程中的分化与简化、字形与音义的关系等方面切入,来探究中国文字的文化底蕴,期望学生对中国文化有更深一层的掌握。

This course covers modern and contemporary Chinese Literature, focusing on academic trends and development of modern and contemporary literature, and further discusses and explores related topics which enable students to understand the existing research findings and trends, including some controversial issues. By focusing and analyze on certain aspects of the subject, explores and discusses on different perspectives and approaches of researches, expands the students’ view of criticism and appreciation, and thus enhances commentary on writers and literary phenomenon. In fact, it helps in arousing student interest in certain research topics, helping in narrowing or even identifying their thesis topics. Focus topics will be studied and discussed to the greatest extent, while keep updates to the new topics.

This course introduces students the fundamental knowledge of poetry and lyrics writing and appreciation, which includes the definition of poems and lyrics, the developments of modern poerty and lyrics, the composition of poem and lyric and the writing skills. Representative works are chosen as examples to help students understand the poem and lyrics writing theories; and students’ abilty to analyse and appreciate poems and lyrics will be enhanced by closely reading those important poetry and lyrics works. Apart from theory learning, students are guilded to write lyrics and modern poetry to express their own thoughts and emotions.
本课程向学生引介诗歌与歌词之欣赏与创作的基本知识,如:诗歌和歌词的定义、现代诗与歌词的发展演变、诗歌与歌词的组成及写作技巧等。在讲解理论时辅以经典作品为例,使学生实地观察诗歌与歌词写作的规律,并提高对诗歌与歌词的审美与辨析水平。课程将引导学生创作诗歌与歌词,从习作中表达自己的思想与情感,并感受文学的乐趣。
