This course is an introduction to linguistics, the scientific study of human language. This course discusses the origin and development of language, the functions of linguistics, and the nature and functions of language. It also covers the 3 elements of languages, the structure system of language (pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar), the variants of phonetics, language and society and the branches of linguistics and so on. Through the fundamental theories of linguistics, students will be equipped with the basic knowledge of linguistics that facilitates them in Chinese Studies.
本课程是一门关于人类语言的科学研究。主要讲授语言学的功用、语言的性质、功用、语言的起源和发展、语言的三要素、语言的结构系统（语音、词汇和语法）、语音的变体、语言和社会、语言的分支科学等等。通过语言学基本理论和基本概念的阐释，让学生为探讨语言学理论打下基础。
