Rationale

This course is designed to present communication studies as a field of research to which many disciplines have contributed. It outlines the directions and main themes of research in the field of mass communication, as well as the whole paradigm shift in media studies and how the field ties with media structure and contemporary society. 


Synopsis

This course is divided into three parts. The first part provides a sociological ‘big picture’, examining relationships between the various components of the media process. The second section focuses on the different dimensions of the media process (production, content and audiences) and different types of media (film, music, news, television, books, computers cyberspace and so on). The third explores the social relationships, highlights the tension between constraint and action in the media process, and see how social, economic and political forces have shaped the development and application of technology.
